Corin Hewitt, Alexander Calder’s Paris Years, Paul McCarthy… What’s up this week at the Whitney Museum in New York ?
“Alexander Calder: The Paris Years, 1926-1933”
Alexander Calder (1898-1976) is one of the most beloved, important, and critically acclaimed artists of the twentieth century. The exhibit focuses on the extraordinary period in which he discovered his true voice. A time when, from the ages of 27 to 34, Calder created his first wire drawings in space, performed his Circus (made in Paris 1926–31 and part of the Whitney’s permanent collection), and invented his signature mobiles. Opening October 16.
Corin Hewitt
Also next week, don't miss your chance to meet Anne & Joel Ehrenkranz Lobby Gallery artist Corin Hewitt in the first public program of the fall season. Learn about his process and take home one of 200 free multiples specially commissioned for the program. Corin Hewitt (b. 1971) occupies the Lobby Gallery in this ongoing installation that is part performance art, part live theater, and part meditation on ideas about still life. Redefining the notion of the artist-in-residence, Hewitt physically moves about the space, cooking, sculpting, heating and cooling, casting, canning, eating, and photographing both organic and inorganic materials. The result is an intimate examination of the cycles of transformation and transience.
Last days...
And if you haven’t experienced “Paul McCarthy: Central Symmetrical Rotation Movement”, be sure to see it before it closes… on October 12! Three Installations, Two Films showcases a group of new and rarely seen works by prominent American artist Paul McCarthy (b. 1945). The show focuses on a core strand of McCarthy’s work - the use of architecture to create perceptual disorientation in the viewer through spinning mirrors, rotating walls, projections, and altered space. The exhibition also includes two of McCarthy's recently rediscovered 16mm films from the 1960s and 1970s.
Don't forget casual day...
Every Friday evening from 6–9 pm Whitney After Hours offers art exhibitions, live performances, artist appearances, education events, and pay-what-you-wish admission - Whitney After Hours is sponsored by Clifford Chance.
